L'Avvenire d'Italia was a Catholic daily newspaper in Italy that appeared from 1896 to 1968. The newspaper was distributed in large parts of Emilia-Romagna , Veneto and Tuscany . The editorial office was in Bologna . Up to 17 regional editions were produced.
history
From 1894 onwards, two representatives of the Movimento cattolico in Italia , the Italian Catholic Movement , Giovanni Acquaderni from Bologna and Giovanni Grosoli from Ferrara, were committed to founding a new Catholic daily newspaper. They wanted to create an alternative to the then dominant wing of intransigents , which dominated the Catholic lay movement towards the end of the 19th century, called Opera dei Congressi . This group was led in Bologna by Marcello Venturoli, who also controlled the official newspaper of the intransingent, L'Unione . Acquaderni and Grosoli found the support of the Archbishop of Ferrara, Egidio Mauri, Archbishop of Ravenna, Sebastiano Galeati , and finally also of the new Archbishop of Bologna, Domenico Svampa . The Venturolis resistance was overcome, L'Unione discontinued, journalists taken over and L'Avvenire d'Italia founded.
The daily developed steadily, increasing its circulation from 4,000 in 1902 to 50,000 in the 1930s. The publication survived the years of fascism by means of an expressly apolitical orientation of the editorial team. Long-time editor-in-chief was Raimondo Manzini, who in 1960 was appointed to the Osservatore Romano in the Vatican in his own capacity . Among the editors was also the later Archbishop of Chieti, Loris Francesco Capovilla .
In 1968 it merged with the Milan daily L'Italia under the new title Avvenire . The new newspaper is based in Milan .
