Nikolaus Burkhäuser

Nikolaus Burkhäuser (also Burckhäuser ; born August 15, 1733 in Fulda , † December 22, 1809 in Würzburg ) was a German Jesuit priest , philosopher and university professor .

Life

Burkhäuser received his training at the Jesuit grammar school in Fulda and the University of Fulda . On September 14, 1750 he entered the Jesuit order, in 1762 he was ordained a priest . In 1765 he went to the Bamberg Academy as a professor of philosophy before receiving a chair in philosophy at the University of Würzburg in 1768 . Here he remained in office after the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773 , but lost his chair in the course of secularization .

After his retirement, Burkhäuser retired to the Würzburg Citizens Hospital to the Holy Spirit , which he had already bought into. Despite his very low pension, he was able to spend the last years of his life there. He died in the citizen hospital in 1809. His printed lectures on philosophy are said to have been of importance for the development of philosophy in the Catholic part of Germany.
