history

L'Opinion was founded on May 15, 2013 by French journalist and media manager Nicolas Beytout, who was previously editor-in-chief of Le Figaro and Les Échos . It was the first newspaper to be launched in France since InfoMatin , which appeared from 1994 to 1996.

The paper describes its content orientation as “liberal, business-friendly, European” (French: libérale, pro-business, européenne ). The newspaper, which appears in the Berlin format with eight to twelve set pages , primarily provides detailed background articles and comments that classify political and economic events from a French perspective. There are no other sections or reports. According to the assessment of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the target group of the paper is “entrepreneurs, higher cadres, middle-class employees, craftsmen and traders”, who belong to the French conservatives in the tradition of the former President Sarkozy , whose circle of friends also includes Beytout. The model was Politico , founded in 2007 by former Washington Post journalists .

The funders of the project were unclear from the start. The carrier is the Bey Medias holding , whose main shareholder is Beytout. The legal form is a stock corporation under French law with start-up capital of 10 to 15 million euros, which is said to come from fifteen investors, including Bernard Arnault from the luxury goods group LVMH Moët Hennessy - Louis Vuitton . On November 23, 2018, a decision was made to increase the capital by 10 million euros. In January 2019, research by the investigative media portal Mediapart came to the result that the US billionaire Kenneth Fisher had invested 2.5 million euros in the newspaper. In addition, the Bettencourt ( L'Oréal ), Houzé / Moulin ( Galeries Lafayette ), Descours ( Piper-Heidsieck ), Savare ( Oberthur Technologies ), Bich ( BIC Group ) families and others are involved in the company.

When it was launched, a print run of 50,000 had been envisaged. Verifiable information on this was not available in mid-2019. The Federal Agency for Civic Education speaks of a circulation of 37,000 copies in 2014. The Alliance pour les Chiffres de la Presse et des Médias reported two million visitors in April 2019 for the website lopinion.fr only.
