history

La Crescenta-Montrose belonged to the settlement area of the Tongva . The white settlement started late due to the lack of open water sources. Initially, the land was given to the school teacher Ignacio Coronel by the Mexican government. He only used the area as grazing land. After the civil war , the former colonel in the army of the southern states Theodore Pickens settled. He used the area for logging. In 1881 doctor and former prospector Benjamin Briggs purchased a substantial portion of Coronel's ranch and named his land La Crescenta . He built a sanatorium here for those suffering from tuberculosis . Because of the healthy, dry air, other sanatoriums opened, including those used by Hollywood stars during the Hollywood Golden Age.

After the surrounding hills were stripped of vegetation by forest fires, landslides and floods occurred in La-Crescenta-Monrose around the turn of the year 1933/1934 , at least 45 people died. Woody Guthrie picked up this flood in a song. In October 1934 there was another storm, which led to the death of two more people.

In the 1930s, the then Hindenburg Park in La Crescenta-Montrose was the scene of several marches by the National Socialist American Federation .
