La morte viene dallo spazio is a science fiction film by Paolo Heusch from 1958. The Italian-French co-production with Paul Hubschmid in the lead role is considered the first science fiction film in Italian film history.
action
Something goes wrong when shooting down a nuclear missile on a manned mission to the moon. Due to the malfunction of one of the engines, the rocket explodes in the asteroid belt, shifting the orbits of many asteroids in such a way that it causes tidal waves, strong winds, fire storms and earthquakes on Earth. While a team of scientists only sees the possibility of averting the global catastrophe by launching all nuclear missiles available worldwide, one of the scholars undermines the project.
Premieres
The film premiered in Rome in September 1958. In 1959 it was shown in French cinemas as Le danger vient de l'espace . The US premiere was on September 27, 1961 in Los Angeles under the title The Day the Sky Exploded . It later ran under the title Death From Outer Space . La morte viene dallo spazio was also released on DVD.
production
The film uses an unusually large amount of stock footage , but is so well assembled that it could be considered the "stock-shot film par excellence" according to a film science article in the Monthly Film Bulletin .
