Labé is a city in Guinea . It is the capital of the region of the same name and prefecture of Labé as well as the center of the geographic region of Fouta Djallon .
The inhabitants labes are predominantly Fulani , the lingua franca in addition to the official French the Fulfulde . Craft ( weaving , shoemaking ), trade and agriculture ( honey ) shape the economic life of the city and its surroundings. Labé is considered to be the Islamic stronghold of Guinea.
history
The city was founded around 1755 by Karamoko Alpha , a religious leader who spread Islam in Fouta Djallon in the 18th century . 1898 is the province Labé into an independent kingdom in the Fouta Djallon ( Fulani - theocracy ). Labé established itself as the second capital of Fouta alongside Timbo ; In 1901 the division into two regions was completed. With the deportation of the last king of Labé, Alpha Yaya in 1905 to Dahomey , the Fulbe theocracy came to an end. Under the French protectorate, the Fouta Djallon is administratively reorganized; Labé becomes the district capital in 1912 under the governor General Ponty.
In 1996 the population was 49,479 according to a census, 64,500 in 2001 and 92,654 in 2014.
economy
Labé is an important trading center for cattle, rice, millet and citrus fruits. Oranges are transported to both Dakar and Mamou , where they are processed into juices, oils, soaps and perfumes in a factory.
