Labdan , the basic structure of the Labdane
The labdans , or labdan diterpenes , are a group of organic - chemical compounds , built up from natural, bicyclic diterpenes . Their basic structure, the labdan , occurs in a large variety of plants , including Salvia sp. , Plectranthus sp. and Andrographis paniculata .
Labdane consist of a decaline structure with four methyl groups and one 3-methylpentyl radical . They are named after the first chemical compound of their class that was found, labdan, which can be obtained from labdanum , a resin of the lacquer rockrose ( Cistus ladanifer ). Labdans exhibit a variety of biological activities, including antibacterial , antifungal, and antiprotozoal activity. They can also have anti-inflammatory effects and are often fragrances too.
