Labdoo is a non-profit aid project which, with the help of IT donations, gives children and young people at home and abroad access to IT and education . Donated laptops are reconditioned and equipped with learning software before they are CO 2 -neutral transported to school projects.

job

Labdoo is a globally active NGO and private initiative of voluntary, volunteer helpers who coordinate a worldwide aid project via the Internet. The aid project collects unused, discarded laptops, tablets or e-book readers for projects abroad and possibly also PCs for regional projects in Germany. The IT donations are reprocessed and equipped with Lubuntu and license-free educational software , to then be passed on to projects around the world. With the help of so-called dootrips, the IT donations are brought to the projects in a CO 2 -neutral manner. Labdoo's stated goal is to reduce the digital divide worldwide in an environmentally responsible way. By reusing used laptops, no further electronic scrap is generated, and no additional CO 2 emissions are generated by the dootrips . Defective devices are exchanged free of charge and taken back for disposal. All services are provided by volunteers free of charge and on an honorary basis. The donated laptops are given free of charge to schools, homes and other refugee / aid organizations.

Unlike the initiative One Laptop Per Child no new laptops will be distributed to schools in Labdoo but Used and Reconditioned and the transport is CO 2 neutral. The economic and environmental costs are very low or nonexistent. This distinguishes Labdoo from other organizations or initiatives of this type and is the most important characteristic of Labdoo.

With over 23,000 collected laptops, Labdoo supports more than 1,800 school projects in 138 countries and thus reaches around 560,000 students (as of July 2020).

Dootrip

At Labdoo, Dootrip refers to the CO 2 -neutral transport of IT donations, the Dootronics. For example, IT donations from flight or transport sponsors, tourists , volunteers from NGOs, schoolchildren, students or project employees are taken away. Dootrips are a key element of Labdoo as the Dootrips bring IT donations to projects without increasing CO 2 emissions . In addition, the Dootrips do not incur any costs for Labdoo, as the IT donations are carried in the luggage of the travelers or other transports.

Dootronic

At Labdoo, the word Dootronic is used to describe any electronic device that is equipped with learning software, is sustainably transported and is intended for an educational purpose. The word is a mixture of Labdoo and the English word for electronic devices: Lab doo elec tronics. Dootronics are marked within the Labdoo network with a unique 9-digit number and a QR code . With the help of the number or the QR code you can get to the URL of the specific Dootronics. The page of the respective Dootronics offers history and device-specific information, such as the serial number and also the status of the device, to ensure traceability and transparency.

Labdoo Hub

Labdoo hubs can be set up where Labdoo helpers regularly prepare, recycle , collect laptops or carry out other Labdoo activities. Often hubs are schools, universities, private households or companies. In addition to the hubs, there are Labdoo acceptance points. The collection points have the function of accepting IT donations for Labdoo, which are then forwarded to a hub. The 4 existing, non-profit associations promote the activities of the Labdoo Hubs, Labdoo acceptance points and helpers in the individual countries, e.g. B. by assuming costs for spare parts, repairs, logistics, etc.

history

In 2010, Labdoo was founded by Jordi Ros-Giralt in the USA and registered as a non-profit organization . A few months earlier, in September 2009, the first IT donation, a laptop, was registered on the website. Jordi Ros-Giralt began working as an engineer without borders in 2005 , collecting and reprocessing laptops for a school in Guatemala . From this idea, a scalable and sustainable concept was developed, which ultimately resulted in Labdoo.
