The Spiez Laboratory ( French Laboratoire Spiez , Italian Laboratorio Spiez , English Spiez Laboratory ) is the Swiss specialist body for the protection of the population from atomic, biological and chemical threats and dangers. It is subordinate to the Federal Office for Civil Protection in the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and has its seat in Spiez .

  • Development of the basics of NBC protection materials.
  • Operation of accredited test centers for the approval and monitoring of NBC protective materials.

  • Investigations of heavy metal pollution in the soil.
  • Nuclear forensic determination of radioactivity levels in sample material.

  • Technical advice to Switzerland on international negotiations for disarmament and arms control.
Scientific Secretariat KomABC
  • Scientific support and management of the Federal Commission for NBC Protection (KomABC).
  • Development of basics for national NBC protection and statements for the KomABC.

International activities

The Spiez Laboratory is an internationally recognized competence center and works with the United Nations (UNO), the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Trade Organization ( WTO) together. The Spiez Laboratory also makes various contributions to the NATOPartnership for Peace ” program.

The Spiez Laboratory became internationally known for its participation in investigations into the alleged poison gas attacks in Syria and the poison attack on Sergei Skripal .

In May 2006, the Spiez Laboratory was the only laboratory in the world to be awarded the maximum mark by the OPCW in the “Nineteenth Official OPCW Proficiency Test” among the 13 participating laboratories.

Hacker attacks

In spring 2018 there were unsuccessful attempts to install a Trojan horse in the authority. According to the Russian IT security company Kaspersky Lab, the attackers had Russian language skills. A few weeks later, in a defensive operation by several European intelligence services, two Russian citizens were arrested on charges of trying to break into the network of authorities with espionage equipment.
