resume

Juan Ladislao Cabrera Vargas was born in 1830 as the son of Mariano Cabrera and Manuela Vargas in the municipality of Totora in what is now the province of Carrasco in the department of Cochabamba . He successfully studied law in Arequipa , Peru and after his return to Bolivia under the government of José María de Achá (1861–1864) he became mayor of Cobija , a city on the Pacific coast that belonged to Bolivia before the Saltpeter War. Under the government of the Bolivian President José Mariano Melgarejo (1864–1871) he was released from his office and lived in Calama until the age of 49, after which he worked as a forensics specialist in the province of Calama, which is now part of Chile.

After the end of the Saltpeter War, he first moved to the town of San Francisco de Chiu Chiu west of Calama and later to La Paz , where he worked temporarily as ambassador and in 1881 as Bolivian interim president. He died at the age of 91 in December 1921 in the Bolivian city of Sucre (according to other sources in San Francisco de Chiu Chiu).

Battle of Calama

Cabrera became famous for defending the city of Calama against the Chilean invasion in the Saltpeter War. After Cabrera had learned of the attack by the Chilean military on the city of Antofagasta on February 14, 1879, he organized the defense of Calama with 130 Bolivians when a Chilean force with more than 540 fighters wanted to take the place on March 23, 1879. The battle for Calama as the first battle of the Saltpetre War has gone down in the history of this dispute over Bolivia's access to the Pacific as "Batalla de Calama" ( Battle of Calama ) or "Batalla del Topáter" ( Battle of the Río Topáter ).

Honor

In memory of the achievements of Ladislao Cabrera, the Bolivian province of Ladislao Cabrera in the Oruro department received his name on October 13, 1941 .
