Ladislaus Kurpiel (born November 13, 1883 in Prague , Austria-Hungary , † June 1930 in Prague, Czechoslovakia ) was an Austrian football player .
In his time, the Bohemian was considered one of the best middle runners of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, was German runner-up with DFC Prague in 1903 and in 1912 reached fifth place with the Austrian team at the Olympic Games . In June 1930 he died of a stroke in Prague, as a result of which he died.
Career
Kurpiel began playing club football at DFC Germania Prague in 1896 at the age of thirteen and soon after switched to the newly formed city rival DFC Prague. With the blue-whites, he came to his first missions in the combat team as a youth and grew over the years to one of the best "middle and centrehalves" in the entire monarchy. He was also considered a very versatile and prudent cover player. He was known and feared for his powerful long-range shots, which were often untenable for the opposing goalkeeper.
He celebrated his greatest success at club level in 1903 with the surprise entry of the Prague team into the final of the German championship , which the Bohemians lost 7-2 to VfB Leipzig . Until the end of his career he played almost exclusively for the DFC, with whom he celebrated numerous successes in friendly matches against top national and international clubs. Only in the 1903/04 season he worked for the Vienna Cricket and Football Club , with which he reached the final of the Challenge Cup .
Kurpiel made his debut in the Austrian national team on June 7, 1906 in a 3-2 win over Germany in Vienna . After his second appearance against Hungary in 1908, he had to wait until May 7, 1911 for his next international match. At that time he was the oldest player in the DFC at the age of 28 and, according to contemporary newspaper reports, had already passed his sporting zenith. Coming to the team as a substitute for the injured Alois Kwitek , he and his club colleague Merz offered a brilliant performance in the 3-1 win over arch-rivals Hungary and thus came back to the "second leg" in Budapest in November of the same year.
Due to his ability and his routine, he became a fixed item in the Austrian team for the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, to which Austria traveled as one of the declared favorites. Since he occasionally helped out very convincingly as a back at DFC Prague, team coach Jimmy Hogan put him in the defense for the first time in the national team after Felix Tekusch's failure during the tournament. Contrary to general expectations, however, he showed some uncertainties in this position and was not the hoped-for support of his team. Kurpiel was used in all three games in the Olympic tournament and also played against Italy in the unofficial consolation round. With this game on July 3, 1912, which brought the Austrians to the consolation round after a 5-1 victory, Ladislaus Kurpiel celebrated his departure from the national team.
