Lafayette is a city and county seat in Macon County in the US state of Tennessee . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , Lafayette had a population of 4,474.
It is named after the French general Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette .
On February 5, 2008 , 14 residents were killed in a tornado.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 11.3 km², without any significant body of water, including Sullivan Lake in the southwest of the rather irregularly shaped urban area. The place is drained in the southern part by the Town Creek .
Lafayette is at the intersection of Tennessee Routes 10 and 52 . Route 52 is the city's main thoroughfare and leads to the Interstate 65 junction at Portland, about 55 km away . The southwest terminus of Tennessee State Route 261 is on Route 52 within Lafayette.

At the time of the United States Census 2000 Lafayette inhabited 3885 people. The population density was 343.3 people per km ². There were 1845 housing units at an average of 163.0 per km ². The Lafayette population was 97.89% White , 0.15% Black or African American , 0.33% Native American , 0.39% Asian , 0.26% Pacific Islander , 0.51% said other races belong to and 0.46% named two or more races. 2.11% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Lafayette distributed to 1718 households out of which 26.1% were living in children under 18 years of age. 49.2% of households were married, 10.6% had a female head of household without a husband, and 36.6% were not families. 34.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 20.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
The population was split into 20.6% minors, 8.4% 18–24 year olds, 24.0% 25–44 year olds, 25.0% 45–64 year olds and 22.0% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 women there were 84.6 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 81.2 men.
