Information board about the Laguna de Rocha

The Laguna de Rocha is a lake in Uruguay .

The Laguna de Rocha is located in the southeast of Uruguay in the area of the Rocha department south of the city of Rocha and the intersecting Ruta 9 and Ruta 15 . It borders the Atlantic coast. It is only separated from the Atlantic by a sand barrier. To the east of the Laguna de Rocha are La Paloma and La Pedrera , for example . The area covers 72 square kilometers. The water depth is up to a maximum of 1.4 meters. On average, however, it is only 60 cm deep. The Laguna de Rocha is fed by the Arroyo de Rocha , which rises in the Departamento Maldonado , the two Arroyo de la Conchas and Arroyo de la Paloma , the Arroyo Sauce, the Arroyo Canelón, the Zanja Honda and the Zanja de los Noques . The lake contains two smaller islands, which are used by water and mudflat birds such as gulls and flamingos as a place to stay. The larger of the two islands is shaped in a kind of delta. It covers around one hectare of solid ground, while the other, much smaller, island is swampy.

The Laguna de Rocha was created when the sea level rose. Their salt content is increased. This is due on the one hand to waves in the Atlantic, but on the other hand to human influence through artificial dam breaks. By the presidential decree of Tabaré Vázquez of February 18, 2010, a few days before the end of his term of office, the Laguna de Rocha was placed under nature protection. It is since 1976 part of the UNESCO - Biosphere Reserve Bañados del Este and therefore part "of the program Man and the Biosphere " (MAB). The Laguna de Rocha has a large population of fish, crabs, prawns and mollusks. It provides a food source for around 200 species of breeding and migratory birds . For example, there endangered species of birds Chilean Flamingo , olrog's gull and black-tailed tyrant nuns (Xolmis dominicanus) , as well as black-necked swan and Coscoroba Swan . The Laguna is therefore a bird sanctuary .

Ruta 10 runs over the sandbank that separates the laguna from the sea, but is interrupted here.
