Lahuachaca is a small town in the La Paz department in the highlands of the South American Andean state Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Lahuachaca is the central place of the canton Pujravi in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Sica Sica in the province of Aroma and is located at an altitude of 3792  m . To the north of Lahuachaca extends the wide plain of the Bolivian highlands, and directly to the east of the town rises the Serranía de Sicasica , a north-south oriented mountain range between La Paz and Cochabamba , which rises to 4,500 m.

Lahuachaca is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano in front of the high mountain range of the Cordillera Central . The vegetation of the region is sparse, because at this altitude no more lush growth is possible. The region has a distinctive time-of-day climate in which the mean temperature fluctuation is greater during the day than during the year.

The annual average temperature of the region is around 11 ° C, the monthly values ​​fluctuate only slightly between 7 ° C in June / July and 13 ° C in November / December (see Belén climate diagram). The annual precipitation is low 450 mm, in the arid period from April to October the monthly values ​​are below 25 mm, and only the months December to February show heavier precipitation between 80 and 115 mm.

Transport network

Lahuachaca is located at a distance of 133 kilometers by road southeast of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the asphalted highway Ruta 2 leads west to El Alto , from there 120 kilometers to the south Ruta 1 via Sica Sica to Lahuachaca . From there the road continues in a south-easterly direction to the departmental capitals Oruro , Potosí and Tarija and to Bermejo on the Argentine border.
