Lajos Bálint (born July 6, 1929 in Delnița ( Hungarian Csíkdelne ), Harghita County , Romania ; † April 4, 2010 in Odorheiu Secuiesc , Harghita County) was Archbishop of Alba Iulia .

Life

Lajos Bálint, an ethnic Hungarian, studied theology in Alba Iulia and was ordained a priest on April 28, 1957 by Bishop Áron Márton . Bálint worked as a pastor in Odorheiu Secuiesc .

Pope John Paul II appointed Lajos Bálint on July 9, 1981 titular bishop of Nova and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia . He was ordained episcopate on September 29, 1981, by the Bishop of Alba Iulia, Antal Jakab . He was the second bishop appointed by the Roman Curia in Romania since the end of World War II .

On March 14, 1990, Bálint was appointed bishop , after Alba Iulias was raised to the status of an immediate archbishopric on August 5, 1991 by the Apostolic Constitution Quod satis constat .

He was released from this office on November 29, 1993 after only three years in office by Pope John Paul II and from then on held the title of retired Archbishop . As a result of decades of grueling engagement under constant reprisals by the communist government, his health was under attack.
