Lake Kapowsin kəˈpaʊ.ə.sᵻn is a lake in Pierce County in the US state of Washington , about halfway between Tacoma on Puget Sound and Mount Rainier in the Cascade Range . The lake is 4 km long and 240… 800 m wide; it lies in a meltwater channel of the Puget tongue of the Vashon Glacier from the Pleistocene . A small unnamed island lies in the northern half of the lake. As indicated by a flooded forest and other features, the Puyallup River was formed over 550 years ago by a lahar from Mount Rainier, the Electron Mudflow. The landslide partially filled the canal (leading to its current flat bottom) and blocked the drainage of Ohop Creek, creating what is now Lake Kapowsin.

A stretch of the Tacoma Rail runs along the west side of the lake and, like Orville Road, connects Eatonville in the south with the town of Kapowsin.

There are a number of fish species in the lake, including rainbow trout , which, like the American perch , are classified as "excellent" for anglers by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife .
