Lake Lure is a town in Rutherford County , North Carolina with 1,192 inhabitants in 2010. The lake of the same name was included in 1927 and acquired in 1965.

history

In 1902 Lucius B. Morse and his brothers Hiram and Asahel purchased 0.26 km 2 of land around Chimney Rock in what is now Chimney Rock State Park for $ 5,000. This property grew to 32 km 2 through further acquisitions . Lucius Morse's wife Elizabeth gave the lake and town its name.

1925 founded the family Morse the Carolina Mountain Power Company and began using a mortgage to build a dam, which the Broad River dammed until 1927 and so the lake with 2.9 km 2 area and 43 km of banks created, named after the town has been. Starting in 1928, the energy produced by the power plant was sold to Blue Ridge Power Co. , a local predecessor of Duke Power , under a 10-year contract .

In 1929 the Great Depression ended further expansion plans. The Stroud & Company of Philadelphia , a lender, dropped the lake and the dam forced auction, owners and posted profit from the generated electric energy up 1965. 1963 authorized the Parliament of North Carolina, the city earmarked municipal bonds ( revenue bonds to emit) to buy the property from Stroud. In 1965 the city bought the dam, power station and land.

Today the city supplies electrical energy to Duke Energy , but more emphasis is placed on keeping the water level constant than on making profit from electricity generation, especially since recreation and tourism are the main economic pillars of the city.

In 1999, the historic Pine Gables complex was entered on the National Register of Historic Places .
