The Lake Maraetai is the river system of the Waikato River belonging Reservoir on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

In the Māori language, the name Maraetai is composed of the words marae for “open area” or “courtyard” in front of a wharenui (meeting house) and tai for the “sea” or “coast” . Therefore the name probably comes from some coast. As an example, there is a Maraetai southeast of Auckland at Waitemata Harbor .

geography

The 4.12 km² large Lake Maraetai is located around 32 km north of Lake Taupo and around 15 km south of the city of Tokoroa , flanked by a hilly landscape up to 350  m high on its eastern side. The lake is 8 km long and varies in width between 60 and 1150 m. The main part of the reservoir extends in the valley of the former river bed of the Waikato River . Another four parts, however, extend into the eastern side valleys, which extend to the east in the central part of the reservoir. The longest arm here has a length of 2.7 km. The height of the lake varies depending on the water level between 184.98 m and 189.47 m, with a maximum lake depth of 68 m. Its immediate water catchment area is 588 km².

The reservoir can be reached via the New Zealand State Highway 32 , which flanks the water on its southeast side, and via the New Zealand State Highway 30 , which touches the lake on the southern part.

Administratively, the lake belongs to the Waikato region .

The Lake Maraetai follow one after the reservoirs Lake Waipapa , Lake Arapuni and Lake Karapiro , the reservoirs Lake Whakamaru , Lake Atiamuri , Lake Ohakuri and Lake Aratiatia go ahead of him.

history

The reservoir and the two associated hydropower plants were commissioned in 1952 and 1970. Together, the power plants generate most of the electricity of all power plants on the Waikato River and together have a nominal output of 360  MW . As of 2020, the operator of both hydropower plants is the majority state-owned company Mercury NZ Limited .

The small town of Mangakino , located in the left arch of the lake , was built in the 1940s for the construction workers of the dam and had 4,456 inhabitants four years after the construction was completed. It was bigger than the city of Taupo at the time . As of 2013, the place had only 744 inhabitants with an unemployment rate of 12.9%.
