The Lake Aratiatia is the river system of the Waikato River belonging Reservoir on the North Island of New Zealand . It is the first of a total of eight reservoirs that line up between Lake Taupo and the city of Cambridge on a section of the Waikato River .
Origin of name
The name Aratiatia means in the Māori language , the "stairs of Tia " , an ancestor of the Te Arawa tribes .
geography
The Lake Aratiatia is located approximately 7 km north of the town of Taupo and approximately 12.5 kilometers from the river outflow of Lake Taupo removed. The Huka Falls are located 2.7 km upstream. The lake is fed by the Waikato River and extends over a length of 3.5 km in the former river bed of the river. With a width of 50 m to a maximum of 275 m, the lake extends over an area between 0.5 to 0.6 km 2 and comes to a maximum depth of 11 m. The height of the lake varies between 335.99 m and 337.82 m depending on the water level. Its immediate water catchment area has a size of 104 km 2
Administratively, the lake belongs to the Waikato region .
The Lake Aratiatia follow one after the reservoirs Lake Ohakuri , Lake Atiamuri , Lake Whakamaru , Lake Maraetai , Lake Waipapa , Lake Arapuni and Lake Karapiro .
history
In the years 1959 to 1964 the dam of the lake and the Aratiatia Power Station were built to generate electricity. Designed for a nominal output of 84 MW , this was never achieved in practice. In 2017, a renewal of the power plant, which in reality had an output of 78 MW, was tackled. Among other things, all turbines should be replaced. The modifications were planned for a period of three years. The operator of the hydropower plant is the majority state-owned company Mercury NZ Limited .
Special features of the lake
The Wairākei Geothermal Power Station is located on the northern bank of the eastern part of the reservoir . At night, the water taken from the Waikato River to cool the geothermal power plant is released to Lake Aratiatia , which causes the water level to rise and the water surface to be warmed by the cold-warm stratification. In the morning, when the demand for electricity increases, the water is used to generate electricity, which then mixes the cold with the warm water.
