The Lake Ohakuri is the river system of the Waikato River belonging Reservoir on the North Island of New Zealand . It is the second of a total of eight reservoirs that line up between Lake Taupo and the city of Cambridge on a section of the Waikato River .
Origin of name
In the Māori language, the name Ohakuri is composed of the guards “ oha ” for “souvenir” or “memory” and “ kuri ” for “dog” . The name could thus refer to a valuable coat made of dog fur.
geography
The 12.9 km 2 large Lake Ohakuri is located around 26 km north of the city of Taupo . The reservoir consists of two arms, one that extends in the valley of the former river bed of the Waikato River and has a length of around 11 km and the second arm, which consists of the former river bed of the Whirinaki Stream and extends over around 11 km to Meanders northeast into the mountain landscape. The width of the arms vary between 30 and 880 m, with the lake measuring 2030 m at its widest, where the two arms meet. The height of the lake varies depending on the water level between 285.1 m and 287.53 m, with a maximum lake depth of 40 m. Its immediate water catchment area is 1528 km 2 .
The reservoir can be reached from a small country road that branches off the New Zealand State Highway 1 and leads directly to the dam and the lake's power station.
Administratively, the lake belongs to the Waikato region .
The Lake Ohakuri follow one after the other reservoirs, Lake Atiamuri , Lake Whakamaru , Lake Maraetai , Lake Waipapa , Lake Arapuni and Lake Karapiro , the Lake Aratiatia precedes him.
history
The reservoir and the associated Ohakuri hydroelectric power station went into operation in 1961 and was designed for a nominal output of 90 MW .
The lake filled only 14 days in January / February 1961. Two thirds of the Orakei Korako geothermal area was flooded and the two geysers Minquini Geyser and Orakei Korako Geyser were lost forever.
As of 2020, the operator of the hydropower plant is the majority state-owned company Mercury NZ Limited .
