The Lake Waipapa is the river system of the Waikato River belonging Reservoir on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

In the Māori language, the name " Waipapa " is composed of the words " wai " for "water" and " papa " for "flat rock" and possibly means "river across the plain" or "river over the flat rock" .

geography

The 1.6 km² large Lake Waipapa is located around 38 km north-northwest of Lake Taupo and around 16 km southwest of the city of Tokoroa , flanked by a hilly landscape up to 325  m high. The lake, which extends in the valley of the former river bed of the Waikato River , has a length of around 8 km and its width varies between 90 and 420 m. The height of the lake varies depending on the water level between 124.27 m and 128.89 m, with a maximum lake depth of 22 m. Its immediate water catchment area is 254 km².

The reservoir can be reached via Waipapa Road , which branches off to the northwest at Lake Maraetai from New Zealand State Highway 30 and accompanies the reservoir at its lower end west to the dam wall.

Administratively, the lake belongs to the Waikato region .

The Lake Waipapa follow one after the reservoirs Lake Arapuni and Lake Karapiro , the reservoirs Lake Maraetai , Lake Whakamaru , Lake Atiamuri , Lake Ohakuri and Lake Aratiatia go ahead of him.

history

The reservoir and the associated hydropower plant were put into operation in 1961 and were designed for a nominal output of 51  MW . As of 2020, the operator of the hydropower plant is the majority state-owned company Mercury NZ Limited .
