The Lake Arapuni is the river system of the Waikato River belonging Reservoir on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
In the Māori language, the name “ Arapuni ” is composed of the words “ ara ” for “way” and “ puni ” for “blocked” and possibly means “a path blocked by an obstacle” .
geography
The 9.3 km² large Lake Arapuni is located around 35 km southeast of the city of Cambridge and around 15 km west of the city of Tokoroa . The lake, which extends in the valley of the former river bed of the Waikato River , has a length of around 22 km and its width varies between 90 and a maximum of 800 m. The height of the lake varies depending on the water level between 109.02 m and 112.18 m, with a maximum lake depth of 49 m. Its immediate water catchment area is 249 km².
The reservoir can be reached from the east on New Zealand State Highway 1 via the small town of Putaruru , from which the Arapuni Road branches off to the west and leads to the small town of Arapuni and the dam of the lake.
Administratively, the lake belongs to the Waikato region .
The Lake Arapuni follows the Reservoir Lake Karapiro , the reservoirs Lake Waipapa , Lake Maraetai , Lake Whakamaru , Lake Atiamuri , Lake Ohakuri and Lake Aratiatia go ahead of him.
history
The reservoir and the associated hydropower plant were commissioned in 1929 and were designed for a nominal output of almost 200 MW . As of 2020, the operator of the hydropower plant is the majority state-owned company Mercury NZ Limited .
