Nikolai Ivanovich Saltykow , count since 1790 , prince since 1814 , ( Russian: Николай Иванович Салтыков ; * October 20 July / October 31,  1736 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † May 4 July / May 16,  1816 greg. ) was a Russian statesman and field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Nikolai was a son of the Russian general en chief Ivan Alexejewitsch Saltykow († 1773) and Anastasia Petrovna, née Tolstoy . He married Natalia Vladimirovna Dolgorukova (1737-1812) in 1762 . From the marriage three sons, the chamberlain Dmitri (1767-1826) and the privy councilors Alexander (1775-1837) and Sergei (1777-1828) emerged.

Career

In 1747 Saltykow joined the Semjonowski bodyguard regiment of the Imperial Russian Army as a commoner and took part in the Rhine campaign in 1748 . In the Seven Years' War he advanced to Kunersdorf to lieutenant colonel , was involved in the capture of Kolberg in 1761 and was appointed major general in 1762 . Between 1763 and 1768 he operated in Poland . In the Turkish war he took part in the conquest of Chotyn . After about four years of health-related absence, he was appointed General en Chef and Vice President of the War College in 1773 . At the same time he replaced Panin as governor at Grand Duke Paul Petrovich and accompanied him to Berlin for his wedding. In 1783 he became a royal tutor of the Grand Dukes Alexander and Constantine appointed. In 1788 he was given the management of the war department. On the occasion of the peace of Värälä Saltykov was a Count applicable . Paul I appointed him Field Marshal and President of the War College on the second day of his reign . Alexander I in turn made Saltykov President of the Imperial Council and the Committee of Ministers in 1812 , and in 1814, with his descent, elevated him to the rank of prince.

Saltykov was a bearer of the Order of St. Andrew the First Called , Alexander Nevsky Order , the Order of Vladimir I Class, the Order of St. Anne , the Order of St. John of Jerusalem , the White Eagle Order and Grand Master of the Order of Malta .
