Lake Tekapo is a small town in the Mackenzie District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
Lake Tekapo is located at the southern end of the lake of the same name, Lake Tekapo , on both sides of the Tekapo River . Through the village leading New Zealand State Highway 8 , of Lake Tekapo with the 30 km southeast situated Fairlie and the 42-km south-west lying Twizel connects.
history
In 1857 the first settlers came to the lake and set up their sheep breeding farm. In 1861 the first hotel was built and a ferry was set up to cross the Tekapo River . 20 years later the ferry connection was replaced by a bridge.
In the 1930s, the construction of the hydroelectric power station on the lake began, but the Second World War initially led to the construction work being stopped. In 1951 the power plant was completed and put into operation. The lake had to be dammed to generate electricity. Some buildings from the founding time disappeared in the lake.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 369 inhabitants, 16.0% more than in the 2006 census.
tourism
The place is shaped by tourism. A campsite right on the lake and rentable apartments or houses with a view of the lake allow tourists to linger in the place. From Lake Tekapo there are also tours to Mount John with a visit to the Mt John University Observatory .
