Lake Wisconsin AVA (recognized February 4, 1994) is a wine-growing region in the US state of Wisconsin . The area is in the southern part of the state. The wine-growing region extends along Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River , at Prairie du Sac , about 40 km northwest of Madison .

The first vineyards were laid out in 1847 by Agoston Haraszthy before he emigrated to California (→ Viticulture in California ). The vineyards are at an altitude of 240 to 270  m . The soil consists of fluvioglacial gravel and sandy loam .

The region's winters are extremely severe. This affects the choice of grape varieties in which French hybrid vines (Léon Millet or Maréchal Foch) and new varieties bred by Elmer Swenson especially for this climate are used.
