Infrastructure

The location of Lakkon surrounded by the neighboring states of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan as well as the ongoing conflicts over the demarcation of borders in the region make it difficult to expand the infrastructure. The connecting road from Lakkon towards Isfara in the west runs through Kyrgyz territory in the vicinity of the village of Kara Bak, east of Lakkon a road that connects the Kyrgyz city of Batken with the Kyrgyz region in the east of Lakkon runs on a short section over unpopulated Tajik Area. Overall, the area around Lakkon is dominated by agriculture, with water being taken from the Isfara River for irrigation near the city of the same name . There is also a psychiatric clinic in the place .

Challenges

In addition to the low material prosperity and the poorly developed infrastructure in the region, Islamism and the border conflicts in the region represent central challenges. According to official information from the Tajik government from autumn 2018, 1,899 Tajik citizens left the country in the previous years for Syria and to fight Iraq , 111 of them came from Nohija Isfara, to which Lakkon also belongs. This corresponds to a disproportionately high proportion and indicates a pronounced problem in the region. In February 2019, Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin announced his intention to bring Tajik citizens back to their homeland from war zones in the Middle East . In the meantime, the fight against Islamist extremism is being pushed ahead in the region, with particular efforts being made to improve the educational situation.

In addition, the ongoing border conflicts on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border are putting a strain on the region's development. The demarcation between the two states has not yet been conclusively resolved due to the differing positions of both sides. Smaller clashes occur again and again in the region, for example on May 22, 2019 when residents of the Kyrgyz town of Ravat, accompanied by some Kyrgyz border guards, entered Tajik territory in a cemetery near Lakkon. A warning shot was then fired from the Tajik side before the situation could be resolved by border troops on both sides. Increased cooperation between the Kyrgyz and Tajik page in the region is the subject of the project United Nations , the one million US $ from the Peacebuilding Fund of the Peacebuilding Commission is supported.
