About this picture

The Leipzig administrative district (regional code 14 7), also the West Saxony planning region , was the successor to the Leipzig administrative district in the Free State of Saxony . The administration was referred to as the Landesdirektion Leipzig . This middle authority was created in the course of the Saxon administrative reorganization and the district reform of Saxony 2008 on August 1st, 2008. On March 1st, 2012 it was integrated into the new regional directorate of Saxony .

The official title of District President in the Saxon Civil Servants Act (SächsBG) was changed to President of the State Directorate by Article 7 of the Saxon Administrative Reform Act.

history

Since 1835 there have been in the Kingdom of Saxony state resources authorities at the time " District Directorates " 1874 " circular main teams were called" and throughout history several times changed its limits. In the Third Reich , these were renamed administrative districts. After the Second World War , administrative districts should initially be established again, but this intention was abandoned in 1947.

After the dissolution of the federal states in the GDR in 1952, state districts were established. Spatially, the administrative district of Leipzig coincided with the former GDR district of Leipzig until 2008 with the exception of the old districts of Altenburg and Schmölln, which are now part of Thuringia.

It was only with the establishment of the Free State of Saxony in 1990 that the basis for the formation of new government districts was created. The regional council at that time was transformed into the regional directorate in the course of the district reform of Saxony in 2008 . The area of the district of Döbeln , which became part of the district of central Saxony , changed to the administrative district of Chemnitz .

The President of the Regional Directorate Walter Christian Steinbach retired on May 31, 2010. Since his inauguration on June 1, 2011, Dietrich Gökelmann , President of the Chemnitz Regional Directorate , also assumed the functions of the Presidents of the Dresden and Leipzig Regional Directorates until the regional directorates were merged into the Saxony Regional Directorate in March 2012.

criticism

Above all, there is criticism of the detachment of the Döbeln district from the Leipzig region, as this would weaken the economic region of Leipzig, which was already the smallest or weakest of the three Saxon regions in terms of inhabitants, area and per capita income.
