The State Police Orchestra of North Rhine-Westphalia (LPO NRW) is a symphonic wind orchestra in Germany based in Wuppertal . It is assigned to the State Office for Education, Training and Personnel Matters of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

history

Up until 1998 there were five police music corps in North Rhine-Westphalia , which were based at the police headquarters in Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Essen, Cologne and Wuppertal. In 1999 the state government decided to set up a large orchestra as the state police orchestra of North Rhine-Westphalia in its place. It should ensure the musical tradition at a central point and continue the tasks of public advertising at a high level. The LPO was designated as its representative orchestra by the state government.

From 2019 the orchestra will be based in Hagen. [outdated]

Profile and tasks

The LPO is a professional orchestra with 45 members. Around 80 concerts a year are played by the full orchestra or the big band . The woodwind quintet, clarinet ensemble, horn quartet, brass notet, harmony ensemble and jazz ensemble also play the same number of appearances .

The symphonic line-up gives concerts with a wide range of demanding and popular classical music. Transcriptions and original works, some of which are seldom heard, are brought into the concert repertoire from the company's own archive of over 4,000 works. The presentation of commissioned works is also one of the cornerstones of the orchestra. Since 2006 the orchestra has premiered pieces by Lutz-Werner Hesse , Betin Güneş , Peter B. Smith and Thomas Bartel.

In addition to appearances at official events or events in the public interest, the State Police Orchestra is also permitted to perform at other events, provided that their nature or significance does not conflict with the representational significance of the orchestra. For such performances, normal market fees apply, with which the orchestra has to cover its material expenses.

In addition to concert appearances, the LPO's big band is increasingly being used in music projects in cooperation with social institutions. Projects such as a joint rock concert with the prison band of the Siegburg prison , a workshop for children's cancer aid together with the Aachen “MC Street Angels” and community concerts in the deaf school in Münster received a great response .

The LPO was often involved in Europe's largest international crime festival “ Mord am Hellweg ”.

LPO recordings are published by HeBu-Verlag and Kliment-Verlag.

Artist

Hans-Paul Breuer headed the LPO when it was reorganized in 1999. He was followed in 2002 as conductor Christian Weiper. In 2003 the artistic board was expanded when Hans Steinmeier became the leader of the big band. From 2004 to 2005 the conductor of the orchestra was Heinz Kricke. Since 2005, Scott Lawton has led the LPO's large cast.

Well-known guest soloists in recent times include Betin Güneş , Joe Doll , Werner Hahn, Ron Williams , Tinie Zacher , Walter Ratzek and Olaf Ott, principal trombonist with the Berliner Philharmoniker .
