Murder on the Hellweg is Europe's largest international crime - Festival and since 2002 as a biennial organized. The Westphalian Literature Office in Unna and the district town of Unna, cultural establishments, culture department jointly manage the project. The festival is a project of the Hellweg cultural region.

history

"Mord am Hellweg" takes place every two years in autumn from September to November; in 2010 it was a project of the cultural capital RUHR.2010 . Its name, the festival has the most famous of all Hellwege , the old military and trade route from Duisburg via Essen , Dortmund , Unna to Paderborn , between Lippe , Emscher and Ruhr is located and about the course of today's B 1 and A40 and A44 follows . The name Hellweg is said to be, among other things, not only Salt Path but also Dead Path or Hell Path, derived from the goddess of the underworld, Hel . Around 30 municipalities or institutions in the Hellweg region form the core of the cooperation community that organizes the festival together.

National and international greats as well as newcomers have accepted the invitation to Hellweg in recent years. Among other things, Been Jussi Adler-Olsen ( Denmark ), Simon Beckett ( England ), Arne Dahl ( Sweden ), Doris Gercke ( Germany ), Veit Heinichen (Germany / Italy ), Joy Fielding ( Canada ), Sebastian Fitzek (Germany) Jilliane Hoffman ( USA ), Peter James (England), Volker Kutscher (Germany), Donna Leon (Italy), Petros Markaris ( Greece ), Deon Meyer ( South Africa ), Jo Nesbø ( Norway ), Helene Tursten (Sweden), Don Winslow (USA) and much more as guests.

A characteristic of the festival are often unusual venues. Readings and a. already held in castle ruins , industrial monuments , old churches and new museums , in police headquarters and correctional facilities , on ships, in outdoor swimming pools or on harness racing tracks .

An important part of “Mord am Hellweg” is the crime anthology , which is compiled for the festival with exclusive commissioned stories. The short stories are set in the respective municipalities in which the festival is being held. The invited authors research their story on site and present it to the audience in a reading during the festival. With “Kalendarium des Todes” the sixth volume came onto the market in 2012, the anthologies are published by grafit Verlag Dortmund.

As part of the festival, the European Prize for Crime Literature ( Ripper Award ) has also been awarded since 2008 . Previous winners of the biennial award are the Swedish authors Henning Mankell (2008/9), Håkan Nesser (2010/11), the French author Fred Vargas (2012/13), the Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen (2014/15 ) and the German author Sebastian Fitzek (2016/17). The prize is endowed with 11,111 euros and is intended to strengthen the literary significance of the crime genre in Europe.

Sebastian Fitzek donated the Viktor Crime Award , which was presented for the first time in 2018 , and the first winner was Michaela Kastel for her thriller So Dark the Forest .

From 2002 to 2010 the festival was called "Mord am Hellweg - Tatort Ruhr", since 2011 it has only been called "Mord am Hellweg".
