Joy Fielding (née Tepperman) (born March 18, 1945 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian writer and actress. She lives in Toronto and Palm Beach with her husband Warren and has two daughters, Shannon and Annie.

Life

Joy Fielding began writing stories at the age of eight and soon afterwards also small plays which she acted out with friends. At twelve, she wrote a screenplay for a television film in which a twelve-year-old murdered her parents. As a teenager, she continued to write stories. However, all of them were rejected by magazines and publishers.

She completed her studies of English literature at the University of Toronto in 1966 with a bachelor's degree . While still a student she had abandoned her plan to become a writer and instead starred in around 20 student films, including the internationally acclaimed film Winter kept us warm (1965) by David Secter. This was the first English-language Canadian film to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival . Fielding wanted to be an actress and moved to Los Angeles after graduating . She lived there for almost three years and starred in an episode of the western series Smoking Colts . After personal and professional disappointments, she rediscovered writing.

She returned to Toronto in the early 1970s and concentrated on writing novels. For a living she mainly played in TV commercials until she earned enough money by writing. Her international breakthrough came in 1991 with the thriller run, Jane, run ("See Jane Run"), of which 1.8 million copies were sold. Her other works also became international bestsellers .

Joy Fielding writes thrillers and psychological thrillers , but they always depict different abysses of society in different ways. The topics reflect the full range of violence: rape, psychological terror, violence in marriage, child abduction and the like. Most of the stories are set in major American cities. The main characters are always women, who are often well-educated and good-looking, who “have achieved something” in life, live in a seemingly perfect relationship and have children. But they often carry secrets, unrealized wishes or unrealized longings that come to light through random occurrences, nervous breakdowns or creeping processes.

reception

In Reclam's Krimi-Lexikon , the characterization of her substantive style was short and to the point, but drastic between the lines: “In Fieldings thrillers popular with a female audience, a heroine who is naive to the limit of her pain usually gets into a plot by her husband. Their secretive tendencies prevented a quick resolution of the drama for three to four hundred pages. "
