Walter Ratzek (* 1960 in Offenau ) is a German conductor and former soldier . Most recently he held the rank of lieutenant colonel and headed the staff music corps of the Bundeswehr in Berlin.

From early childhood he devoted himself to the piano and later also the flute. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army Music Corps 9 of the German Armed Forces in Stuttgart in 1979 . From 1980 to 1985 he studied Kapellmeister, conducting with Professor Wolfgang Trommer and piano in the class of José Luis Prado at the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf . He completed his studies in 1985 as a qualified Kapellmeister.

Subsequently he was second music officer in the Mountain Music Corps 8 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen until 1987 , then second music officer in the then staff music corps of the Bundeswehr (now the music corps of the Bundeswehr ) and head of the chamber orchestra there . From 1989 to 1995 he headed the Army Music Corps 2 in Kassel . He was then appointed head of the Bundeswehr training music corps. In October 2001 he succeeded Michael Schramm as head of the Bundeswehr Music Corps, who in turn succeeded Colonel Georg Czerner as head of the Bundeswehr's military music service. In November 2012, Walter Ratzek began his service as head of the staff music corps of the Bundeswehr in Berlin. Successor in the music corps of the Bundeswehr was Lieutenant Colonel Christoph Scheibling . After a year and a half, Walter Ratzek left the Bundeswehr staff music corps in July 2014. After 35 years of service, he celebrated his departure from the military music service of the Bundeswehr and at the same time handed over the conductorship to Lieutenant Colonel Reinhard Kiauka.

In addition, Walter Ratzek works internationally as a pianist, guest conductor and workshop leader. He has also been involved in more than 20 CD productions. In 1991 he was a founding member of the Hesse Symphonic Wind Orchestra. From 2002 to 2012 he was President of the German WASBE section, and since 2003 he has been the conductor of the German Wind Philharmonic .

Since 2016 Ratzek has been professor for wind orchestra conducting at the “Claudio Monteverdi” Conservatory in Bolzano .
