The map puffer ( Arothron mappa ), also known as Mappa puffer , lives in the tropical, western Indo-Pacific from East and South Africa to the Ryūkyū Islands , Samoa , the Ryūkyū Islands, south to New Caledonia and the coast of northeastern Australia ( Queensland ). It is common in the Seychelles , but only sporadically in the rest of its range. He always stays close to a hiding place, especially in clear lagoons and in protected outer reefs near the coast.
The color drawing of the map puffer fish consists of a pattern of intertwined black lines that run radially to the eye. The basic color is whitish, yellow or greenish, often black between the pectoral fins . The fish are 65 centimeters long. The skin is flaky and covered with small spines.

Map puffer fish live close to the ground, are solitary and territorial and feed on fleshy and hard algae, sponges , sea squirts , molluscs , crustaceans and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates .
