Grand River Valley AVA (recognized November 21, 1983) is a wine-growing region in the state of Ohio . The area is located in the administrative units of Lake County , Geauga County and Ashtabula County in the northeast of the state.
The Denomination of Origin is a sub-region of the Lake Erie AVA transstate wine region and is just 3 km (2 mi) from the Grand River and 22 km (14 mi) from the shores of Lake Erie .
The harshness of winter is alleviated by heavy snowfalls (→ Lake effect snow ), as the snow layer protects the lower part of the vines.
The overall cool wine-growing climate affects the choice of grape varieties . In addition to very hardy and early-ripening French hybrid vines or local new varieties , the choice is increasingly being made for early-ripening European noble grapes to improve the quality of the wines .
