Lake Erie AVA (recognized November 21, 1983 ) is a wine-growing region in the states of New York , Ohio and Pennsylvania .

Viticulture has been practiced on the south coast of Lake Erie since the early 19th century . The grape variety has always been dominated by the inferior Concord . During Prohibition , some winemakers could only survive by selling berries for household use or by illegally smuggling wine into Canada .

After Prohibition, viticulture found it very difficult to take off.

The overall cool wine-growing climate affects the choice of grape varieties . In addition to very hardy and early-ripening French hybrid vines or local new varieties , the choice is increasingly being made for early-ripening European noble grapes to improve the quality of the wines.
