The landscape protection area Heseler Wald und Umgebung is a landscape protection area in the district of Leer in the northwest of the state of Lower Saxony . It bears the number LSG LER 00016. As the lower nature conservation authority, the district of Leer is responsible for the area that is named after the forest of the same name . The Heseler Wald nature reserve is embedded in the nature reserve .
Description of the area
The protected landscape area, designated on August 8, 1969, covers an area of 8.52 square kilometers and is located on partial areas in the municipalities of Firrel and the municipality of Hesel , on the territory of the joint municipality of Hesel .
The nature reserve was initially 870 hectares in size. It was reduced to around 852 hectares in 2001.
The Heseler Wald is the largest closed forest area in the district of Leer. In the north it merges into an intensively used arable and grassland area divided by hedgerows . In the north-west, wet grassland , poor grassland and Kleinseggenriede on high moor , Aumoor and Podsol soils characterize the area. In the south there are raised bog areas, which are mainly used as grassland and divided by rows of trees.
Flora and fauna
The Heseler forest consists mainly of ground acid mixed oak forest with a high proportion of mature trees and significant occurrences of Luzulo - Buchenwald .
Protection purpose
The main purpose of protection is to protect against changes "which are likely to damage nature, impair the enjoyment of nature or deface the landscape."
