Heseler forest

The Heseler Wald is a forest area in the Lower Saxony municipality of Hesel in the district of Leer . Part of the forest is designated as a nature reserve.

description

The forest is located northeast of Leer, directly east of Hesel. With around 600  hectares, it is the largest contiguous forest area in East Frisia . The forest area lies on a flat, undulating ridge of the Leerer Geest as part of the East Frisian-Oldenburg Geest , which is up to 16 meters high and thus one of the highest places in East Frisia. The forest was created as a mixed forest in the middle of the 19th century on an area presumably used for arable farming . The reforestation of the area stopped sand drifts, which had their cause in the destruction of heathland to generate plagues after the abandonment of the Premonstratensian monastery Barthe in the 17th century.

There are small forest ponds in places within the forest . In addition, the Silbersee, a small body of water created by soil degradation, is located in the forest.

The Heseler Wald is crossed roughly in the middle by Landesstraße 24, which runs from Hesel to Westerstede . In the west, the district road 59, which leads from the state road 24 near Hesel to the state road 59 in Ockenhausen , runs through the forest area.

In the south of the forest is the forester's house Kloster Barthe. Most of the forest is surrounded by agricultural land. In the west it borders in places on the locality of Hesel, in the east on that of Schwerinsdorf .

Protection status

The forest and parts of its surroundings have been designated as a landscape protection area "Heseler Wald und Umgebung" (code: LSG LER 16) since 1969 . The nature reserve was initially 870 hectares in size. It was reduced to around 852 hectares in 2001. Part of the forest is registered as an FFH area (No. 2611-331). This was designated in October 2018 as a nature reserve " Heseler Wald " (code: NSG WE 308). Legally protected biotopes can be found in small areas , including forest ponds and other small bodies of water, wet meadows and sandy heaths. Two oaks at the forester's lodge Kloster Barthe are designated as natural monuments (code: ND LER 075).

Recreation

The forest serves as a local recreation area . It is criss-crossed by numerous paths that can be used for walks or hikes and some are also suitable for cycling. There are also bridle paths through the forest. There are forest sofas for "forest bathing" in several places in the forest. There is a rest area near the Silbersee.

There is a forest playground in a dune area.

In the Heseler Wald there is an approximately one kilometer long tree nature trail with information boards about native trees.

archeology

In the north of the Hesel Forest is the deserted area of the Barthe Monastery . The ground plan of the former monastery building is made visible through hedges.

In the vicinity of the forester's lodge Kloster Barthe there is the Heseler Schanze, a historical rampart, which is believed to be part of the Schanz system of the fortress Stickhausen together with the ski jumps in Rhaude , Detern and Potshausen . Prehistoric burial mounds can be found in several places in the forest .
