The Langblättrige carding thistle ( Morina longifolia ) is a plant from the genus of the carding thistles ( Morina ) in the subfamily Morinoideae within the family Caprifoliaceae (Caprifoliaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The long-leaved card thistle is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 50 to 100 centimeters. The leaves are thistle-like, the leaf margins are thorny.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to August. The bracts are broadly ovate, pointed and covered with thorns on the edge . The hermaphroditic flowers have a double flower envelope . The calyx is bilobed. The outer calyx rim has two longer and several shorter thorns. The chalice has five columns. At first it is white and later reddish in color.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34, less often 16.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the long-leaved cardendistel is the Himalaya region with southern Tibet , Bhutan , India , Nepal and Pakistan . It inhabits alpine meadows and forest clearings at altitudes of 3,000 to 4,300 meters.

The long-leaved card thistle is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens. The species has been in culture since 1839 at the latest.
