The lansi trees ( Lansium ) are a genus of plants in the mahogany family (Meliaceae). The three species are native to Southeast Asia.

description

Lansium species are diocesan or monocular trees that reach a height of 30 m. Buttress roots are often formed or the trunk is fluted at the base. The trees have a sticky milky sap .

The alternately paired or incorrectly imparipinnate and alternate leaves are up to 50 centimeters long and stalked. The large leaflets are petiolate, sometimes with pulvini on the stalks and ovate, elliptical to obovate, as well as entire and pointed or pointed to tail at the tip. Stipules are missing. The leaflets are usually glabrous on the upper side and sparsely to weakly hairy on the underside. Pulvini can also be present on the petioles

The cauliflor on the trunk or ramiflor on the branches and on the twigs appearing inflorescences are grapes , ears or rarely panicles . The short-stalked flowers are five-fold and hermaphrodite or unisexual with a double flower envelope. The short calyx is cup-shaped. The petals are cream-colored or white. The ten, short stamens are fused into a fleshy tube. The hairy ovary is upper constant with wide, hairy pen .

The fruits are berries with 1 to 5 seeds and soft pericarp . The seeds often have an aril .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 144.

use

The lansi tree is cultivated as a fruit tree in Southeast Asia and South India because of its tasty fruits .

Systematics

Three types are recognized:

Lansium breviracemosum Kosterm. : It occurs on Sumbawa .
Lansi tree ( Lansium domesticum Corrêa ): It occurs in southern Thailand, Malaysia , Sumatra , Borneo and Java.
Lansium membranaceum (Kosterm.) Mabb. : It occurs in Sumatra.

The first description of Lansium domesticum comes from 1807, while the other two species were only described in 1965 and 1985, respectively. Another in 1846 as Lansium silvestre M.Roem. described species is meanwhile under the taxon Aglaia silvestris (M.Roem.) Merr. been classified in a different genus.
