Larinus planus is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of five to eight millimeters and have an elongated and oval body with a relatively flat top. They have a black body color and are finely and lightly haired. The hairs form wavy spots and bands on the wings (elytra). In addition, the body is dusted yellow. The dust layer is thickest after hatching and is gradually rubbed off. The upper wings have fine longitudinal lines between which the surface is densely and finely structured and wrinkled with dots. The elytres initially run parallel and only taper to broadly rounded tips behind the middle. The antennae and occasionally the legs are colored red-brown. The trunk is about as long as the bell-shaped pronotum and sometimes has a small central keel. The compound eyes are flat.

Occurrence

The animals occur in Central and Southern Europe as far as the Caucasus . In the north the distribution area extends to Denmark and the south of Norway . They are also found sporadically in England and Wales . They can be found in dry and stony places on various sunflower plants , such as thistles and cornflowers , from lowlands to high altitudes. They are common, but their numbers are declining. In the north of Central Europe they are already missing in some places.

In the 1960s the species was introduced to North America for biological control of introduced thistles. The species has been represented there ever since.
