Larry Darnell Hughes (born January 23, 1979 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a retired American basketball player .

Career

In the 1998 NBA Draft , Hughes was selected in 8th place by the Philadelphia 76ers . The first 1½ years with the Sixers were mixed, however, so that he was shipped to the Golden State Warriors . With the Warriors he indicated his potential and developed into a high performer. Hughes scored 22.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in the remaining 32 games. He was a starter with the Warriors for the next two years before moving to the Washington Wizards .

Hughes made his breakthrough at the Wizards in the 2004-2005 season when he hung up 22 points, collected an average of 6.3 rebounds, distributed 4.7 assists and posted 2.89 steals. He was also elected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team that season . After this season he was a free agent , which means he was not under contract with any NBA team and was signed in the off-season by the Cleveland Cavaliers for $ 70 million over five years. In his first season in Cleveland, he could not prove his skills due to constant injuries and only played 36 games. Even for the next two years he could not justify his lavish contract.

In January 2008 he was traded to the Chicago Bulls along with Drew Gooden , Shannon Brown and Cedric Simmons for Ben Wallace and Joe Smith . After a brief stint with the Bulls and the New York Knicks , Hughes was traded to the Sacramento Kings in February 2010 . On February 23, he was fired by the Kings without having played a game for them. Instead, he signed with the Charlotte Bobcats until the end of the season.

He then spent a year with his family before signing a contract with the Orlando Magic at the beginning of the 2011/2012 season . He was released from the Magic on February 2, 2012 and has never found an NBA team since.
