Lars Vilks
Lars Endel Roger Vilks ( pronunciation : [ ˌlɑːʁs ˈvilːks ], born June 20, 1946 in Helsingborg ) is a Swedish artist . He holds a doctorate in art history and was professor at the Bergen Art and Design School from 1997 to 2003 .
Nimis and Arx
Vilks became known in 1980 as the creator of the wooden sculptures Nimis and Arx , which are now located in the Kullaberg nature reserve in Höganäs , Skåne . In 1996 the small area with the sculptures of Vilks was declared an independent state called Ladonia .
Mohammed drawings
publication
In 2007 Vilks was invited to participate in an exhibition with the motto Hunden i Konsten (“The dog in art”) in Tällerud , Värmland . Vilks supplied three pen drawings in A4 , all of which show the Islamic prophet Mohammed as a roundel dog .
On July 20th, the day before the exhibition opened, the organizers decided to remove Vilks' drawings from the exhibition. The spokeswoman Märta Wennerström said that she initially did not "realize the gravity of the situation" and then decided to remove the drawings after consulting with the Swedish authorities and private individuals.
After the initial refusal to publish the drawings, Vilks sent his drawings to Gerlesborgsskolan in Bohuslän for an exhibition to open on August 18th. However, the school (where Vilks is an occasional lecturer) stated that it had chosen not to show the drawings due to safety concerns.
On August 18, the Nerikes Allehanda newspaper in Örebro printed one of the drawings in an editorial on self-censorship and religious freedom .
consequences
A week later, on August 25, 60 Muslims demonstrated in front of the newspaper office against the "insult to the Muslims of Islam". Vilks himself received death threats from Islamist extremists.
On 27 August, the Swedish chargé in Tehran, Gunilla von Bahr, appointed to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, where she took a note of protest to the Iranian government. On August 28, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared in a press conference that Zionists were behind the drawings.
On August 30, Pakistan joined the Iranian protest. The Foreign Ministry in Islamabad said: "Unfortunately, there is an increasing tendency among some Europeans to mix freedom of expression with the blunt and deliberate insult to the 1.3 billion Muslims in the world." According to Pakistan, Swedish Chargé d'Affaires in Islamabad, Lennart Holst, said that he “fully shared the views of the Muslim community” and found the August 18 publication “unhappy”.
The spokeswoman for the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Anna Björkander, said, however, that this was a "misunderstanding" on the part of the Pakistanis. She added: "The Chargé d'Affaires said that he was sorry if the publication hurt Muslim feelings." Holst is also said to have explained to the Pakistani side the importance of freedom of the press in the Swedish constitution.
On September 15, the Iraqi group of the terror network Al-Qaeda Islamic State in Iraq announced by video message that they had placed a bounty of 100,000 dollars on Lars Vilks : "From today we call on everyone to shed the cartoonist's blood, who dared to humiliate the prophet, ”the message said. "We'll raise the reward to $ 150,000 if he's slaughtered like a lamb," they continued to threaten. The Swedish police reacted promptly and took "appropriate measures" for protection.
During a lecture at Uppsala University on May 11, 2010, Vilks was attacked by a spectator and slightly injured. A commotion broke out in the hall, in the course of which a policeman was injured. Two Muslim attackers were arrested. Also in May 2010, two men pelted his house with gas bottles.
An Islamist terrorist attack in Stockholm on December 11, 2010, which only barely had a devastating effect, was justified, apart from the Swedish military operation in Afghanistan, with the Mohammed caricatures by Vilks.
In January 2014, American Colleen LaRose ( Jihad Jane ) was arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison for planning an Islamic-inspired assassination attempt on Vilks.
On February 14, 2015, there was an Islamist terrorist attack at a Copenhagen event with Vilks; the filmmaker Finn Nørgaard was shot dead and other people were injured. The alleged assassin was shot dead by police the following night after a likewise fatal attack on a Jewish synagogue .
