On February 14 and 15, 2015, there were two Islamist attacks in Copenhagen . On the afternoon of February 14th was the cultural center Krudttønden in Copenhagen area Østerbro an attack perpetrated. The Danish documentary filmmaker Finn Nørgaard was killed and three police officers injured. The aim of the attack was a discussion event on the subject of art, blasphemy and freedom of expression, in which the Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks also took part.

The following night there was a second attack on the Copenhagen synagogue , in which the Jewish guard Dan Uzan was shot and two police officers were injured. The perpetrator, Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein , was caught by emergency services shortly afterwards and shot after resistance.

Course of action

The attack on the cultural center Krudttønden (German: "The Powder Keg") occurred on Saturday, February 14, 2015. A perpetrator opened fire with an automatic weapon from the outside through the facade window into the cultural center, resulting in an exchange of fire with two bodyguards of the PET and a police officer. The perpetrator killed a visitor to the event, documentary filmmaker Finn Nørgaard, and injured three police officers present. At that time, a discussion event took place in the center's hall. The Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks was one of the speakers on the subject of “Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression ” . Vilks and the French ambassador to Denmark, François Zimeray , who was also present , were not injured. Other participants were the activist of the group Femen , Inna Shevchenko , and the curator of the art festival “Passion for Freedom”, Agnieszka Kolek. It is believed that the attack was aimed at Vilks.

After the attack, the perpetrator fled in a stolen car and then continued his escape in a taxi.

The following night, the same perpetrator shot and killed the Jewish security guard Dan Uzan in front of the synagogue on Krystalgade and injured two policemen. Dan Uzan was an economist who worked for the Danish Ministry of Finance and volunteered on the security team of his Jewish community. The three men stood guard to protect the guests of a Bat Mitzvah celebration .

Investigations

After the attack, the police first looked for two men. The getaway car was found about two kilometers north of the first crime scene. Information from the driver of the taxi used by the perpetrator on his further escape enabled an address in the Copenhagen district of Nørrebro to be determined and observed.

There, the alleged perpetrator was found on February 15, 2015 shortly before 5 a.m. by Danish forces. When approached by the police, the suspect shot the police officers and was subsequently shot. According to the Danish police, the perpetrator is the 22-year-old Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, who was born in Denmark. He had previously become conspicuous through violent crimes and violations of the gun law. Furthermore, the perpetrator is said to have been involved in gang crime.

The Danish news and secret service Politiets Efterretningstjeneste (PET) suspects a political motive behind the attacks.

The German federal police and the Swedish police participated in the manhunt.
