Las Tunas is a province in eastern Cuba . Its capital is the city of the same name, Las Tunas . Until the administrative reform in 1976, it was part of the much larger province of Oriente .

geography

The province of Las Tunas has a total area of ​​6592.66 km². In the south the Gulf of Guacanayabo forms the natural border, in the west the province of Camagüey . The Atlantic joins in the north, the provinces Holguín and Granma in the east and southeast.

Since the province has hardly any forest today, Las Tunas became part of a state reforestation program. By 2015, 18.5% of the total area should be forested again. In 2017, 19.3% was achieved. In 2019, the target figures were exceeded and profits from forestry were reported.

Administrative division

The province of Las Tunas is divided into eight municipalities . With the exception of Majibacoa, the administrative headquarters are located in the cities of the same name.
