action

Stan and Ollie are two sailors on shore leave. You rented a car. At first, Stan almost runs over a pedestrian. Ollie takes the wheel, but promptly knocks over a street lamp. When they park and want to explain something to Ollie Stan, they run into Thelma and Ruby, who are annoyed about a chewing gum machine because it doesn't want to give anything despite inserting a coin. Of course Stan and Ollie are there. Ollie, who wants to prove again that he is the smarter of the two, shakes the gum machine, which breaks it and all the chewing gum is strewn on the floor. Therefore, they clash with the owner of the machine. Thanks to the help of the women, they can decide the argument for themselves. Stan and Ollie take Thelma and Ruby for a spin. On the way back they get stuck in a traffic jam caused by a construction site. When a car crashes into yours, it escalates, with the dispute between the opponents spreading to the entire column and the drivers mutually demolishing and ruining their vehicles. Only the arrival of a motorcycle policeman ends the orgy of destruction. Stan and Ollie drive away, but without Thelma and Ruby, who ran away for fear of the policeman. You get into a railroad tunnel and, thanks to a passing train, you can leave the motorcade behind you. However, your car will be crushed by the train.

Others

Thomas Benton Roberts groomed Stan and Ollie's car, which ends up being destroyed. For example, he made a special bonnet and also did the bodywork. A smoke machine was used for the smoke. Ten cars, which were largely destroyed, were also bought for Two Tars . Some of them still worked after filming. The policeman's motorcycle, which was ultimately crushed, was run over by a steamroller for this effect, which almost broke. The traffic jam scene was shot on Centinela Boulevard, other locations were Hal Roach Studios in Culver City and streets in Santa Monica . Filming lasted from June 22 to July 3, 1928.

criticism

The critic at the time of the German film-illustrated Lichtbild-Bühne praised the film as a “splendid grotesque” and “very funny entree to the evening”.
