politics

In 2015, Southern ran for the Libertarian Party of Canada for the Langley – Aldergrove district. It was briefly taken off the list, but then put back on the list with support from Breitbart News and The Rebel Media. It received 535 votes, which was 0.9% of all votes. It is included in the alt-right movement.

Media activism

In June 2015, Southern took part in the SlutWalk in Vancouver as a reporter for Rebel Media . She held a sign that read "There is no rape culture in the West," which was torn up by other protesters. In March 2016, LGBTQ protests broke out in Vancouver when she defended her view that there are only two genders. In October 2016, Southern officially changed her gender to male to reflect new gender identity laws on official Canada documents. In 2016, Southern published her book Barbarians: How Baby Boomers, Immigrants, and Islam Screwed My Generation (Barbarians: How Baby Boomers, Immigrants, and Islam Cheated on My Generation) . In March 2017, Southern announced that she was separating from Rebel Media and becoming an independent journalist. In the same month, she received clearance to attend the press briefing at the White House . In 2018, Southern shot the documentary Farmlands , which deals with the situation of white farmers in South Africa who are frequently victims of robberies and murders, for which Southern indicates ethnic motives. In addition, according to Southerns, farmers would be disadvantaged by the Black Economic Empowerment Act. In May 2019, Southern released the documentary Borderless , which critically examined the work of the NGO Advocates Abroad in supporting migrants in Greece , on Youtube .

Political activism

In 2017 Southern supported the “Defend Europe” campaign of the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement , which campaigned against the rescue operations of NGOs in the Mediterranean from refugee ships . Southern was subsequently arrested by the Italian Coast Guard when a ship on its way to a rescue operation was blocked. In March 2018, Lauren Southern was arrested while trying to enter the UK. She was officially forbidden to enter the country until further notice, although she had no previous convictions. A spokesman for the Home Office said that "a stay of Lauren Southern in Great Britain is not conducive to the common good." Southern was photographed with other people at the G20 summit in Hamburg in 2017 by members of the " Störungsmelder " blog, and their photos were also spread on Twitter. Since Southern wore a T-shirt of the Identitarian Movement, she was assigned to this, which led to clashes with protesters. Above all, the volunteer fault reporter blogger Sören Kohlhuber was involved in distributing the photos and information, whereupon Zeit Online stopped working with him.

Withdrawal from the public

On June 2, 2019, Southern announced on her website that from now on she wanted to live her life less publicly and would therefore withdraw from social media . For the time being, she will turn to her studies again. However, she does not rule out a return to political work.
