Laurence Lindo

Sir Henry Laurence Lindo CMG (born August 13, 1911 in Port Maria , † May 8, 1980 in London ) was a Jamaican diplomat .

Life

Henry Laurence Lindo was the son of Ethel Mary Gibson and Henry Alexander Lindo and attended Jamaica College . From 1931 to 1934 he was a Rhodes scholarship holder in English at Keble College , Oxford . From 1935 to 1943 was the third grade school inspector for the schools for Jamaica. From 1939 to 1943 he was an assistant information officer in Jamaica. From 1943 to 1952 he was employed in the Colonial Secretariat in Jamaica. From 1952 to 1959 he was the administrator of Dominica . He was the first born in the West Indies to be appointed to such a government role. During his tenure, the road network was expanded and an administrative reform was carried out. In 1957 he was awarded the Order of Jamaica . In 1957 and 1959 he was acting governor of the Leeward Islands (Antilles) . From 1960 to 1962 he was Secretary of the Governor of Jamaica Kenneth Blackburne when the post-colonial era began for Jamaica after 300 years. In 1962, the year of Jamaica's independence, he became High Commissioner (Commonwealth) in London. As High Commissioner, he was involved in loan negotiations and a £ 1 million a year grant from the UK government to the Jamaican government. From August 1962 to December 1973 he was High Commissioner in London . In 1972 he became doyen of the diplomatic corps in London, although the high commissioner was not originally counted as a crown servant in the diplomatic corps.

On March 30, 1963, he was accredited by Franco Maria Malfatti at the European Commission and represented Jamaican interests at Robert Schuman when Great Britain joined the Common Market.

From 1966 to December 1973, based in London, he was Ambassador to Paris . From 1967 to 1970 he was ambassador to Bonn based in London .
