Laurence Oliphant, 1st Lord Oliphant (* around 1434, † 1499 ) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was the eldest son and heir of Sir John Oliphant, Lord of Aberdalgie in Perthshire , from his marriage to Margaret Ogilvy, daughter of Patrick Ogilvy of Auchterhouse . He was still a minor when his father was killed in battle on January 23, 1446 as part of a feud between Clan Lindsay and his wife's family, Clan Ogilvy . In 1450, King James II appointed Sir David Hay of Yester († 1478) as his guardian.

From 1450 to 1451 he accompanied William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas , on a pilgrimage to Rome via Flanders and France .

By June 29, 1461 he had been knighted . For the first time on January 13, 1464 he took part in the Scottish Parliament as Lord Oliphant . This title had apparently been awarded to him shortly before by King James II. In the following period he regularly took part in the sessions of parliament. In 1470 and 1471 he also held the office of Sheriff of Perthshire.

In 1484 he was one of the ambassadors to the court of King Richard III. traveled from England to negotiate a peace with England and a marriage between her niece, Lady Anna de la Pole, daughter of the Duke of Suffolk , and the Scottish Prince James, Duke of Rothesay (later King James IV ).

After King James III. Had been killed by insurgents in 1488, Lord Oliphant stood on the side of the new King James IV and participated in the suppression of the resistance against him. In 1491 he traveled again to England as a diplomat and was sent to France and Spain later that year to look for a suitable bride for the king. In December 1491 he was already back in Scotland where he was present at the conclusion of a peace treaty with King Henry VII of England , during which the later marriage of his daughter Margaret Tudor to James IV was initiated.

The exact date of his death is not known. The last time he was mentioned on February 1, 1499, was present at a meeting of the Scottish Privy Council. On April 8, 1500, his eldest son John had already succeeded him as 2nd Lord Oliphant.

Marriage and offspring

In his first marriage he married Lady Isabel Hay, daughter of William Hay, 1st Earl of Erroll and Lady Beatrix Douglas. He had five children with her:

  • John Oliphant, 2nd Lord Oliphant († 1516);
  • William Oliphant of Berriedale († around 1508) ⚭ around 1489 Christian Sutherland, heir daughter of Alexander Sutherland of Duffus;
  • Laurence Oliphant (⚔ 1513 at Flodden ), Abbot of Inchaffray;

After the death of his first wife, he married Elizabeth Cuninghame, daughter of Sir Humphrey Cuninghame of Glengarnock. This marriage remained childless.
