history

Lauterbach Castle

The place was first mentioned in the 14th century and includes the place Nichzenhain . The village was named after the local stream of the same name, which rises in the farming village of Hartmannsdorf to the southeast . Lauterbach was dominated by dairy farming and agriculture. Documents mention a noble family from Lauterbach. In the place are the remains of an early German moated castle (pond with island), a former tower hill castle.

The manor in the village belonged to Adam Friedrich von Schönberg, who died here unmarried of the leaves in 1778 . The manor then fell to his uncle, the chamberlain Rudolph Dietrich von Schönberg auf Bieberstein and Thammenhain . When he died in 1789, the manor came to the two co-leaners Adam Rudolph von Schönberg and his brother Christian Ehrenreich von Schönberg . At the end of the 18th century, the manor was sold to the Esche family of merchants and manufacturers. In 1884 Moritz Samuel Esche built Lauterbach Castle on the site of the old mansion and rebuilt it on behalf of Arnold Esche from 1907-09 according to plans by Henry van de Velde . “The lavishly and lavishly designed fixtures and remodeling of several rooms, which have essentially been preserved to this day, are among his most beautiful works” (source www.henry-van-de-velde.com). After the expropriation of the Esche family (1948) and use as an apartment building until after the fall of the Wall, the new owners devote themselves to a detailed restoration.

The church, built in Romanesque style, dates from the 12th century and has been rebuilt several times. The church tower was completely destroyed after a fire in 1630 and only rebuilt in 1840.

Lauterbach was incorporated into the Neukirchen community on January 1, 1996.
