The Bieberstein Castle is located on the Bobritzsch , a tributary of the Freiberger Mulde in Reinsberger district Bieberstein , mittelsachsen , Saxony . There are two complexes, the larger "New Castle" and the small "Old Castle" (former castle, built over with "Schlösschen").

history

New Bieberstein Castle

The first documented mention of a nobleman named after the castle dates back to 1218. The lords and later barons of Bieberstein later played an important historical role in Bohemia, Silesia and the Lausitz region. They died out in the 17th century.

In the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle, place and rule of Bieberstein belonged to the Marshals von Bieberstein , who were not related to the aforementioned noble family von Bieberstein. The first family member named after Bieberstein Castle was named Heinrich Marschall on June 15, 1399 . Bieberstein remained in the possession of this family until 1602, which still exists today under the name of Baron Marschall von Bieberstein . A modern castle developed from the castle, of which the medieval square tower still reminds us.

The new palace was around 1600 with the medieval dungeon contracted into a closed assembly. Between 1630 and 1807 the castle was owned by the von Schönberg family , who also owned the neighboring Reinsberg castle . Gotthelf Friedrich von Schönberg (1631–1708) had most of the building demolished down to the foundation walls in 1666 and rebuilt in its present basic form. In the period from 1710 to 1720 the outside staircase on the west side and the four-flight staircase were built.

Until the middle of the 19th century, the Bieberstein manor belonged to the southwestern part of the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon district office of Meißen with the places Bieberstein , Burkersdorf , Gotthelffriedrichsgrund , Hohentanne , Rothenfurth and the west of Krummenhennersdorf . The rule was limited in the west by the Freiberger Mulde and in the east by the Bobritzsch.

Bieberstein Castle was a youth hostel until 1992 and is now owned by Maritta Rogalla von Bieberstein Koch-Weser, Caio Koch-Weser's wife, and is used as a conference center. His palace park with its old trees is not open to the public.

In the adjoining chapel hangs the coat of arms (staghorn beetle) of the von Schroeter family, who lived in this castle since the beginning of the 19th century.
