Course of the Luni |
The Luni ( Hindi : लूनी, Lūnī ) is a river in the western Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat .
It rises as Sagarmati in central Rajasthan, then flows through the Thar desert to the southwest and seeps away after 495 km in northern Gujarat into the salt marshes of the Rann of Kachchh , whose main tributary it forms. The Luni drains an area of 37,363 km².
The main spring is located at about 550 m altitude in the Pushkar Valley in the western Aravalli Mountains near the city of Ajmer . The main tributaries are Sukri , Mithri , Bandi , Khari , Jawai , Guhiya and Sagi from the right and the Jojari from the left . The area of the area drained by the Luni is also known as the Luni Basin .
The Luni is relatively salty and is therefore also called Lavanavari ( Sanskrit for "salt river"). The high salt content is caused by the evaporation of the water carried along when flowing through the Thar desert.
